Tyler Mulder was born February 15, 1987 and is a part of a large family with seven brothers and sisters. While he attended Unity Christian School in Orange City Iowa, he broke the Iowa High School Athletic Association state record in the 800m. He also held a school record in the 400 meters and won conference championships in the 400m, 800m, 1,600m, and 4×400 relay. In addition to track, Mulder also played soccer and ran cross country while in high school.
Mulder attended and competed for the University of Northern Iowa. With a time of 1:49.2, he succeeded in winning the NCAA Indoor Championship in the 800 meters his junior year and went on to finish 3rd at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was an 8-time All-American in both indoor and outdoor track. After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Exercise Science, Mulder joined Oregon Track Club in 2010.
In 2010, Mulder placed 3rd at both the USA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Throughout 2010, Mulder continued to improve his times setting four different personal bests throughout the season. He topped off the 2010 season running gut 400 meter leg of the American Record setting indoor distance medley relay. In 2011, Mulder reached the IAAF World Championships ‘A’ standard by running 1:44.83 at the Oxy High Performance Meet. At the USA Outdoor Championships, Mulder finished 4th, finishing just outside of claiming a spot on Team USA. Mulder finished 2011 strong being a member of the winning USA DecaNations Team and taking home the gold at the Pan American Games.
In 2012, Mulder competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials winning both his prelim and semifinal and entering the final with the fastest qualifying time. Mulder finished 5th in the finals. He also set a new personal best of 1:44.75 in Lignano, Italy. Mulder is currently training with Oregon Track Club Elite with coach Mark Rowland.
