Ty Akins was born on January 6, 1986 in Bainbridge, GA. He attended Bainbridge High School, where he won two state championships in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.
Akins went to college at Auburn University where he majored in Sports Management. During his time with the Tigers, Akins was the 2007 NCAA Champion, Outdoor All-American, SEC Outdoor Champion and NCAA Indoor All-American. He made history by becoming Auburn’s first NCAA high hurdles champion since 1927, breaking his own school record with a time of 13.42 in the final.
After competing at Auburn University, Akins turned pro and began to appear on both the National and International scene. In the 2008 & 2012 Olympic Trials, Akins was a finalist in the 110m hurdles. Akins consistently competed at the USA National Championships over the next four years, finishing as a semi-finalist in 2009 and finalist in 2011. Akins posted a time of 13.55 in the 110m hurdles at the 2013 USA Championships.
2005-NCAA Indoor All-American (4x400m Relay), Pan-Am Games Silver Medalist (110mH) 2007-NCAA Champion (110mH), NCAA All-American (110mH), SEC Champion (110mH) 2008-SEC Indoor and Outdoor Runner Up (60mH &110mH), NCAA All-American Indoors and Outdoors (60mH &110mH), NCAA Runner Up Outdoors (110mH), Olympic Trials Finalist (7th Place). 2009-Was a semi-finalist at USA Championships.
